- Accounting semiotically for new forms of textuality and narrativity in digital brand storytelling

The new forms of textuality that have sprung up with the advent of digital technologies and media, spanning various communicative fields and practices, are an intriguing topic for semiotic theory. In recent years, the ubiquitous practice of digital brand storytelling, via the proliferation of digital devices and platforms, and expressive forms such as personal videos, blogs, podcasts, games, has changed the entire narrative creation process, thus requiring new thinking about semiotic methodology and tools. This chapter provides an overview of the different types of texts that semiotics has scrutinised ever since the 70’s, from the first studies about advertising, to the idioms brought about by digital innovations, in an attempt to demonstrate how structuralist and post-structuralist semiotic concepts may account for new and emergent forms of textuality and narrativity in brand storytelling.

Playing fields are "spaces where the communitas suspends its everyday life and structures" and "The internal logic of sporting games is connected to values from the social context" (Parlebas, Pierre. 2013. Motor praxeology: A new scientific paradigm. In Mariann Vaczi (ed.), Playing fields: Power, practice, and passion in sport, 127-144. Reno: University of Nevada Press). But what about the space in between? What kind of semiotics organisation can be detected in the membrane between player and liminal space where spectators are not allowed yet specific characters needed to carry out an event? We can therefore identify a liminality that can be connected either to the controlled or the wild playing field and depending on which of the two is the case can be analysed according to the degree of regulated system of signs which they produce. This implies different pathways and rituals: as matches are played, a variety of bodily activities may be taking place concurrently. Furthermore, it is inevitable that these activities attract the attention of the audience or alternately lead a player to interact with a non-player.In this article, I will first try to identify certain semiotics features, especially connected to Eco's Peircian concept of Encyclopedia, that characterize the status of liminal space around playing field. Then I will focus on liminality in soccer, investigating what kinds of interaction exist outside the playing area.

Sacred monsters: this is how most of the Italian media and public call actors Gassman,
Mastroianni, Tognazzi, Manfredi, Sordi, to mark their legendary status in the Italian history
of cinema. Comedy in particular is strongly associated with, and often defined by, the
presence of these immensely popular male stars. However, this same period of time, this
unique genre, has often relegated female figures to fixed stereotypes (the young maiden,
the older woman, the mature one). How can we investigate such a complex phenomenon
as the Commedia all’Italiana from a gender point of view? For example, by observing the
different representations of time and of the aging process in the bodies of actors, actresses
and characters (with particular attention to the works of Antonio Pietrangeli). In this way
perhaps we will find another kind of “monstrosity”: female otherness, constantly looking
for its (uncomfortable) position within movies that are unapologetic representations of the
male gaze.

This essay introduces the volume Marcel Proust and Signification, published by the journal E|Con the occasion of the centenary of Proust’s death. The first section, “Proust rediscovered”, interrogates the duration of the Recherchein time beyond this anniversary, with a view to rethinking Proust's work within a semiotic framework. The second section, “The Truth of Signs”, proposes a theoretical itinerary through some particularly relevant readings of an essential theme of the Recherche: the relationship between signs and vision. Through comparison of theories from different disciplinary fields, this section focuses on the search for truth in Proust's work. The final section, “Theories, Reworkings, Mythologies”, presents the three main thematic axes of the volume, illuminating the interartistic and intermedial dimension of the reception of Proust's work

The labyrinth and the desert, of which Borges writes about and which Ignazio Mortellaro references, are two different ways of challenging the doors and consequently of confronting different points of view. The labyrinth is an extreme attempt of protection, a pursuit destined to fail.The desert is a pre architectural space and could not be otherwise. Apparently the opposite of the labyrinth, it is instead it’s natural relation. Paradoxically, these metaphors both illuminate and constrain the ways in which we think about time in art.

In the occasion of the centenary of Roland Barthes’ birth (1915-1980), Ocula’s editorial board has decided to dedicate a special issue to the scholar who is recognized as the one who has laid the foundations of a semiotic approach to popular culture. We pay this homage by publishing three essays written by Isabella Pezzini, Gianfranco Marrone and Marcel Danesi, to whom we have asked an intellectual testimony on Barthes as a semiotician.

Our Introduction is rather particular. As particular and special as this monographic issue which we present here. It is composed of only five essays – and each has been written in response to an invitation. Also of particular note is the date: we are running a year late (1915-2015) as the centenary has just passed and we have overrun our deadline, as often happens in academic circles, but in this case it was done deliberately, pour cause.

Come comparare pubblicità di un medesimo periodo riguardanti uno stesso prodotto di consumo, come per esempio le energie rinnovabili? Il libro risponde a queste e altre domande, da una parte concentrandosi su una forma testuale specifica, l’annuncio pubblicitario; dall’altra utilizzando gli strumenti semiotici, in particolar modo quelli provenienti dall’analisi del visivo. E' possibile gettare uno sguardo nuovo sul mondo dei Beni Culturali? Questo libro risponde attraverso otto saggi che riassumono una ricerca triennale condotta incrociando lo strumento della semiotica con le competenze nell'ICT. I quattro autori si sono chiesti soprattutto che cosa possono fare i i nuovi linguaggi dei media interattivi per il progetto di forme innovative di comunicazione del Cultural Heritage. Il patrimonio culturale italiano è talmente eccezionale per qualità e quantità da far sì che la discussione su di esso travalichi i confini nazionali. Se il Cultural Heritage è percepito sempre di più come patrimonio dell'umanità, anche le analisi e le soluzioni devono avere un orizzonte globale: lo studio confronta esperienze di gestione e comunicazione dei BBCC attraverso i nuovi media attive in tutto il mondo.

The authors who take part in this issue have skilfully risen to the challenge: by working on the problem of urban planning, areas of exclusion, industrial areas, the suburbs, as well as the “symbolic centres” of cities (such as theatres or boulevards) or on thematic-cultural planning bound to remembrance, like that of parks. The gaze issue and putting into perspective constantly returns as a restriction of those power relations on which the political dimension is based.
