The article focuses on the Franciscan reception of Christ's apocalyptic discourse in the Gospel of Matthew (chap. 24). The so-called 'Little Apocalypse' was a reference text for the dissident front of the Spiritual Franciscans and for Angelo Clareno, who rewrote it in the form of a prophecy uttered by Saint Francis about the persecutions that his few true disciples would suffer. Through John of Rupescissa, this prophecy circulated widely in Italy and in Spain between the end of the Middle Ages and the early modern age.

In premodern Europe, prophecy was both an incisive weapon in the struggle for power and a medium to convey information. In this article, I examine the circulation in fourteenth- and fifteenth-century Florence of a prophetic dispatch: the so-called Toledo Letter, an old prophecy updated several times in late medieval Europe. The five different versions of the letter I have located in Florence are an ideal case study in the reception of prophecies as texts which frame the ongoing natural and political disasters in a broader religious narrative, place them in a temporality in which past and future overlap, and encourage the readers to believe in what is announced.

Il volume raccoglie venticinque saggi su Francesco d’Assisi e la sua immagine, pubblicati da Roberto Rusconi in sedi diverse (enciclopedie e cataloghi, riviste e atti di convegno) nel corso di oltre trent’anni, tra il 1980 e il 2016. Siamo dunque di fronte a una lunga fedeltà: una fedeltà certo non esclusiva – come mostrano gli importanti studi di Rusconi sulla storia della predicazione e della confessione, del papato, della santità e del profetismo – ma doppiamente significativa, sia perché attraversa l’itinerario storiografico dell’autore fin dall’inizio, o quasi, sia perché accompagna il lettore dall’ultimo centenario della nascita di Francesco (celebrato nel 1982) al prossimo e ormai imminente centenario della morte, nel 2026.

In early 16th-century Castile, the Dominican María of Santo Domingo became famous because of her mystical raptures, which brought her as many admirers as critics. The article focuses on María’s three surviving letters, highlighting exchanges and encounters with Italy. María’s relation with Italian culture was surprisingly important, starting from the crucial model of epistolary writing represented by Catherine of Siena, already followed by a Castilian beata of an earlier generation, María of Ajofrín. Girolamo Savonarola and his charismatic follower Lucia Broccadelli also had a considerable influence on María visions. On the other hand, María of Santo Domingo received harsh criticism from the Italian humanist Pietro Martire d’Anghiera and from the General of the Dominicans, Tommaso de Vio. A further glimpse of her relations with Italy, particularly with Rome, is offered by the so far unknown figure of a curial employee, García Valdés. The appendix provides the first critical edition of the three letters.

Prendendo le distanze da una lunga tradizione di riflessione teologica, Niccolò Machiavelli si interessa alla profezia non in quanto dono divino o eccezionale condizione di conoscenza, ma in quanto arte politica. Partendo da questo assunto, il saggio intende mostrare che per Machiavelli la profezia è un’arte politica performativa, in cui l’azione del profeta coincide con la sua parola. Nel Principe, nei Discorsi, nelle lettere e in altre opere di Machiavelli emerge in maniera non sistematica un modello pragmatico di comprensione del carisma profetico e del suo operare che si segnala per la sua novità. L’originalità di tale modello, tuttavia, si comprende solo alla luce del peculiare rapporto tra profezia e comunicazione pubblica presente nella Firenze del tempo, e dell’aspro dibattito che contrappose i fiorentini sulla figura di frate Girolamo Savonarola. Machiavelli partecipò al dibattito dal punto di vista privilegiato di chi era interessato non a stabilire se le profezie di Savonarola fossero autentiche, ma piuttosto a riflettere – facendo largo uso della comparazione tra forme politiche e religiose diverse, antiche e moderne – sulla «verità effettuale» del loro impatto sui contemporanei.

“Around the turn of the sixteenth century, Italians began to imagine time-yet- to-come in a way that appears more familiar to twenty-first-century conceptions than the soteriological, divinatory, or anticipatory notions of the Middle Ages” (4). That, in a few words, is the main thesis of Nicholas Scott Baker’s book, which in order to illustrate this change combines an innovative cultural history of financial risk-taking in Renaissance Italy (chapters 1–4), and a stimu- lating analysis of the representation of fortuna among Renaissance humanists, merchants, and artists (chapters 5–8).

In medieval Europe, miscellaneous manuscripts represented a common form of transmission of a wide range of texts, both literary and technical ones. Amidst the array of recent scholarship that has sought to refine our way of classifying, describing and analysing this type of manuscript, there is a relatively neglected category of texts: prophecies. The importance of miscellanies and compilations in the transmission of prophetic texts is well known, but most of the sources has not yet been investigated. This article analyses the different layers of a so far unknown codex (Siena, Biblioteca Comunale K.VI.62), in which a number of widespread texts (Telesphorus of Cosen- za’s Libellus, the Vaticinia de summis pontificibus) are collected together with much rarer ones (prophecies concerning the Turks, the Prophecy of the True Emperor). Through a close reading of the manuscript and a comparative overview of other prophetic miscel- lanies, this paper highlights some methodological issues related to the transmission of prophetic texts: the presence of rare texts, their unusual attribution, and the joint tradition of clusters of texts.

Il 18 dicembre 1513, dal pulpito di Santa Croce, il predicatore Francesco da Montepulciano profetizzò una serie di sciagure che avrebbero colpito Firenze. L’episodio impressionò i contemporanei, afflitti da guerre ed epidemie, ma è stato ridotto dalla critica a un’eco delle idee di Girolamo Savonarola. Grazie a una ricerca di prima mano su documenti e manoscritti, Michele Lodone mostra il peso di una tradizione diversa, e il rifiorire di attese apocalittiche coltivate per secoli ai margini dell’ordine francescano. Le varie emozioni di chi ascoltò la predica (paura, preoccupazione, scetticismo) consentono all’autore di illuminare in modo originale la parzialità e soggettività di ogni testimonianza. Seguendo le tracce di Francesco attraverso fonti disparate, il libro mostra l’evoluzione di un uomo che, prima di trasformarsi in profeta, era stato eremita e predicatore di pace, e aveva tentato, alla vigilia della Riforma che divise il mondo cristiano, di riformare almeno se stesso e i propri compagni.

The essay discusses both vernacular and Latin prophetic texts circulating in late medieval Tuscany. The main focus lies on three case studies: the Merlin Corpus and the composite volgarizzamento elaborated by Paolino Pieri in the Storia di Merlino; the dissident tradition of the Franciscan fraticelli, torn between seclusion from the world, inner withdrawal, and proselytism; finally, the prose and verse writings attributed to Saint Birgitta of Sweden, quickly transformed in Tuscany from a visionary reformer into a broader prophetic authority.

Pseudoepigraphy is extremely common in late medieval prophetic literature. Even if the attribution of texts is often fanciful, the historian must try to understand the causes behind this phaenomenon. How can we explain the prophetic authority of Iacopone da Todi? Focusing on three prophecies attributed to him between the 14th and 15th centuries, the essay answers starting from the charismatic role of Iacopone in the memory of the so-called ‘Spiritual Franciscans’. Following a militant reading of some Laude composed by Iacopone, this charisma was interpreted prophetically by the groups of Fraticelli who had separated themselves from the Church of Rome. Spreading outside their communities, the Fraticelli’s eschatological imagery became a form of expression unrelated to their original dissident programme: a prophetic rhetoric that fostered the production of new texts with political objectives, providing them with a time-tested language and evocative prophetic authority, such as Iacopone’s.

Intorno al 1470, Gabriele Biondo lasciò Roma, distaccandosi dall’educazione impartitagli dal padre, l’umanista Biondo Flavio, e dalla carriera curiale dei fratelli. Dalle montagne di Modigliana – mentre l’Italia era scossa dalle guerre e dal proliferare di profezie sulla fine dei tempi – Biondo divenne la guida spirituale di una comunità di donne e di uomini che vivevano a Firenze, Bologna e Venezia. Il libro ricostruisce per la prima volta la parabola di questa figura enigmatica, la cui opera mistica e apocalittica, pur denunciando Girolamo Savonarola come Anticristo, fu a sua volta processata per eresia. Emerge così, in tutta la sua complessità, il caleidoscopio di esperienze religiose che animarono la penisola italiana tra XV e XVI secolo: esperienze non sempre riconducibili allo scontro tra ortodossia ed eterodossia che pochi anni dopo la morte di Biondo, avvenuta nel 1511, si impose come conseguenza della Riforma.

An outstanding episode in the history of the relations between the Spanish monarchy and the Immaculate Conception relates to the protection given by Isabella the Catholic to a ‘living saint’ of Portuguese origin, Beatrice of Silva (c . 1426-1491). The essay examines the devotion to the Immaculate that bound Beatrice to the Queen from the different perspectives of gender issues, political strategies and religious experience. The founding of the Conceptionist Order in 1494 can thus be interpreted as the outcome of a negotiation between the desire for independence of Beatrice’s companions and the centralising reform of the Observant Friars Minor.

The contribution addresses the complex question of the relationship between theoretical reflection on prophecy and the concrete circulation of prophetic texts through a case-study: the treatise of the German theologian Henry of Langenstein (1392) against the prophetic Libellus on the Great Schism attributed to the mysterious Telesphorus of Cosenza (c. 1386). Telesphorus’ Libellus was very popular since the early years of the Schism. Henry of Langenstein’s intervention is interesting not only for his intention to unmask Telesphorus’ pro-French political perspective, but also for the arguments proposed by the German theologian, which provide a series of sharp observations on the ambiguity of prophetic language, on its emotional dimension (in particular with respect to the use of images), and on the cognitive dynamics underlying post-eventum or self-fulfilling prophecies. The contribution provides as well a list of the 67 known manuscripts of Telesphorus’ work.

Alle origini, la «brigata» dei gesuati presentava alcuni tratti di non conformismo religioso: la vita itinerante, le vesti rappezzate, il legame carismatico (non istituzionale) che univa i «povari di Cristo». Questi elementi fecero sì che, agli occhi dell’autorità ecclesiastica, Giovanni Colombini e i suoi compagni apparissero simili ai gruppi dissidenti allora presenti in Italia centrale, come i fraticelli. Alla luce di tale prossimità – apparente, ma rischiosa – il saggio si concentra su tre momenti che contribuirono a definire l’identità stessa dei gesuati: l’inquisitio cui nel 1367, a Viterbo, furono sottoposti Colombini e la «brigata de’ povari»; il riemergere di dubbi e sospetti a Siena (1412), Bologna (1425) e Venezia (1436-1437); la metamorfosi dell’ideale di povertà, da concreta proposta di vita a irripetibile paradigma spirituale.

Dans le ms. 2994 de la Biblioteca Riccardiana de Florence (f. 35r-41r) on lit le seul témoin d’une traduction italienne partielle, copiée dans le troisième quart du XVe siècle, du traité De missa de Pierre de Jean Olivi. La contribution propose une édition critique du texte, précédée d’une description du manuscrit et de quelques indications sur les caractères de la traduction. La dernière partie de l’introduction est consacrée à la circulation du De missa, et en particulier au passage concernant le bon larron, qui fait écho, à travers l’Arbor vitae d’Ubertin de Casale, dans les Dialogi sette de Bernardino Ochino : un document remarquable de la continuité potentielle entre la théologie franciscaine de la miséricorde du Christ et la théologie réformée de la justification par la foi.

Saint Francis’ Prophecy: Authority, Authenticity and Franciscan Identity between the 14th and the 15th century The essay focuses on a vision attributed to Francis of Assisi, in which the saint predicts the advent of a heretic pope, the decline of the Franciscan Order and the persecution of the few righteous. The first attestations of the prophecy, which met with great success between the late Middle Ages and the modern age, date back to the beginning of the 14th century, when the text circulated within the persecuted groups of ‘spiritual’ Franciscans. It is not clear to whom the hint to the heretic pope originally referred, but it is precisely the vague and unspecified nature of the vision that favours the active role of the readers, who are entrusted with the responsibility of making explicit the allusions. Moreover, the intrinsic ambiguity of prophetic language is intertwined with the ‘mediated’ nature of a speech delivered by Francis, transmitted by his companion Brother Leo, but recorded only by later authors such as Corrado of Offida and Angelo Clareno. In this stratified memory, the transmission of the alleged words of Francis testified the charismatic continuity between the ‘founder’ and his true disciples: the few spiritual friars, which were isolated and persecuted, and therefore all the more in need of a guarantee of authenticity that would justify and somehow redeem their defeat.

The article proposes several reflections on the studies on medieval and early modern prophetism produced in the last few decades, with the purpose of outlining its most relevant issues. From a methodological point of view, an ever-increasing attention to philological, material and cultural aspects can be observed. This scrupulousness has entailed a decrease in the importance not only of “classical” one-sided theses but also of the attention paid to ideal aspirations and general historical changes, which, until a decade ago, was an important feature of the historiography of prophetism. The text is divided into three sections: the first focuses on the relationship between prophetism and the political dimension; the second deals with the cultural aspects of the prophetic phenomenon; the third reflects on those authors and prophetic traditions that have become better known thanks to recent publications.

Created by Jean Delumeau in the 1970s, the expression “pastoral of fear” has been very popular among historians. The article aims to verify this model from the concrete perspective of the history of texts and of their reception, and from a geographically and culturally defined point of view: the Florentine preaching on the last judgement between the half of the 14th and the beginnings of the 16th century. Following a chronological order, the three sections of the essay intend to test as many historiographical stereotypes, which cannot be taken too literally: the individual eschatology replacement of collective eschatology; the 15th century transition, after the end of the Schism and until the last years of the century, from the waiting of the end to the end of waiting; Savonarola’s influence on the many penitential preachers who, after him, crowded the squares and churches of Florence.

By the end of the 14th century, Birgitta of Sweden’s “Revelations”, widely circulated throughout Europe, and were particularly popular in Tuscany. The first ever vernacular translation of the “Revelations” was realized in Siena sometime before 1399. In the following years, this trans- lation and other Birgittine texts were copied, in Latin or in vernacular, in the scriptorium of the Paradiso outside Florence, the first Birgittine monastery to be founded after Vadstena. But the Italian reception of Birgitta’s legacy was not only characterized by reading, abridging, translating or listening to her authentic works. Alongside them, new revelations on Church reform were inspired by her figure (such as Rasmo of Viterbo’s visions), and new prophecies concerning the Italian politics of the 15th and 16th century were attributed to her (such as the ‘frottola’ “Destati o fier leone al mio gran grido”, or the ‘cantare‘ “Ave Iesu, figliuol di Maria”).

Tra gli ultimi anni del Quattrocento e i primi del Cinquecento, Gabriele Biondo, figlio dell’umanista Biondo Flavio, fu guida spirituale di una comunità di uomini e donne, laiche e religiose, dislocata tra Modigliana, Firenze, Bologna e Venezia. Pur senza rifiutare del tutto la dimensione esteriore della professione religiosa, la proposta cristiana di Biondo si fondava sulla svalutazione delle appartenenze e delle definizioni istituzionali, e sull’insistente invito all’annullamento di sé e all’abbandono mistico alla volontà divina. Nel 1501 le implicazioni di tale proposta attirarono l’attenzione dei custodi dell’ortodossia. Un medico, membro della comunità, fu incarcerato a Venezia, e un trattato di Biondo stesso – intitolato Ricordo – fu sottoposto a giudizio per eresia. Da una questio difensiva scritta dal teologo Antonio Trombetta, frate Minore conventuale e docente di teologia a Padova, sappiamo che i sospetti si appuntarono sugli insegnamenti di Biondo in materia ecclesiologica e sacramentale – in particolare, sulle dichiarazioni circa la superfluità della mediazione sacerdotale. L’autorevole difesa di Trombetta riuscì a far scagionare il Ricordo, valorizzandone la polemica contro le superstizioni cui la pratica sconsiderata dei sacramenti poteva portare, e approvandone la diffidenza nei confronti dei carismi profetici incontrollati, così frequenti in quegli anni. Tra questi, quello di Girolamo Savonarola, salito sul rogo appena quattro anni prima.

In un saggio ormai classico, Sanjay Subrahmanyam ha mostrato le convergenze e le connessioni tra le attese millenaristiche che nel XVI secolo investirono l’Europa occidentale e l’India Moghul, passando per l’Impero ottomano e l’Iran. Una ‘congiuntura millenaristica’ di portata in parte comparabile sembra da anticipare alla metà del secolo precedente: l’espansione ottomana, infatti, culminata ma non conclusa con la conquista di Costantinopoli (1453), rappresentò un evento profetico capitale per culture e religioni diverse. Il presente intervento si concentra su tre figure relativamente note nel panorama profetico italiano del Rinascimento, ma non ancora studiate in un’ottica comparativa, come suggerisce la loro comune condizione di emigrati da territori che stavano per cadere o che erano caduti sotto il dominio ottomano. Frate Minore conventuale e poi arcivescovo, il dotto e ambizioso teologo bosniaco Giorgio Benigno Salviati (Juraj Dragišić, nato a Srebrenica) fu direttamente coinvolto nei più significativi episodi carismatici del suo tempo (prendendo le difese di Girolamo Savonarola e contribuendo alla stesura e divulgazione dell’Apocalypsis nova). Il sedicente papa angelico Teodoro, irrequieto monaco olivetano figlio di Giovanni di Scutari, fu condannato invece nel 1515, a Firenze, a una pubblica ritrattazione del proprio messaggio profetico. Il sacerdote secolare Paolo Angelo, infine, emigrò con la sua famiglia da Drivasto alla terraferma veneziana, da dove, tra il terzo e il quinto decennio del Cinquecento, inviò alle massime autorità laiche e religiose di quegli anni le proprie solerti compilazioni di profezie vecchie e nuove, orientate in senso anti-luterano e anti-ottomano. Giorgio Benigno, il monaco Teodoro e Paolo Angelo si inserirono nel vivace contesto profetico italiano con esiti molto diversi: esiti che invitano a riflettere sulla geografia oltre che sulla storia del profetismo nell’Italia di quegli anni, sulla diffusione di inquietudini e tensioni profetiche a diversi livelli culturali e sociali, e sul problema dei rapporti di quelle tensioni e inquietudini con le autorità politiche e religiose.

This paper briefly presents the principal orientations of the historiography on the Observances from their origin to the Council of Trent, in order to identify the main issues, studied or still to be investigated. The discussion – following a general and, as far as possible, comparative perspective – is divided into three parts: the first one reviews the historiography dealing with the Observant movements as a whole; the second one focuses on the fields so far singled out by the scholars, and at the issues of chronology, geography and terminology; the third one proposes a sort of provisional historiographical program, focusing on several sources, figures and issues which are still waiting for an adequate study.

Over the second half of the 15th and the beginnings of the 16th century, the Florentine intellectual Francesco Alfani lived between the Este court of Ferrara (from where he was banished in 1485 ca, after a sex scandal) and Florence, under the Medici and then during the Republic. Thanks to a series of unpublished or unknown sources, the article offers a preliminary profile of Alfani. Neglected by scholars, his figure deserves further research because of his biography as much as for his literary production, characterized by a remarkable variety of literary genres and cultural influences. In addition to the ‘volgarizzamento’ of the Tractatus de rebus antiquis et situ urbis Romae (entitled Le antiquità della alma Roma) and a series of love poems, the contribution underlines the importance of the MS Siena, Biblioteca Comunale degli Intronati, I.XI.45, which contains a number of Alfani’s letters and poems, his vernacular translation of Lucian of Samosata’s dialogue between Minos, Alexander, Hannibal and Scipio, and a so far unknown copy of Lorenzo the Magnificent’s Ambra (Descriptio hiemis). ==== Francesco Alfani, intellettuale fiorentino vissuto tra la seconda metà del XV e gli inizi del XVI secolo, fu attivo prima presso la corte di Ferrara (dalla quale fu allontanato intorno al 1485, in seguito a uno scandalo sessuale) e poi nella Firenze medicea e repubblicana. Grazie al reperimento di una serie di notizie inedite o ignote, l’articolo propone una prima ricognizione della vita e delle opere di questo personaggio trascurato dalla critica, ma meritevole di studio sia per la sua vicenda biografica sia per la sua produzione letteraria, caratterizzata da una notevole apertura a generi e influenze culturali molteplici. Insieme al volgarizzamento del Tractatus de rebus antiquis et situ urbis Romae (intitolato Le antiquità della alma Roma) e a una serie di poesie d’amore, si segnala il codice I.XI.45 della Biblioteca Comunale degli Intronati di Siena, che insieme a varie lettere e componimenti poetici (latini e volgari) di Alfani, riporta un suo volgarizzamento, in terzine, del dialogo di Luciano di Samosata tra Minosse, Alessandro, Annibale e Scipione, e un testimone finora ignoto dell’Ambra (Descriptio hiemis) di Lorenzo il Magnifico.

This paper focuses on the so far unknown Tuscan vernacular translation of Angela of Foligno’s Liber transmitted by the ms. Magl. XXXVIII.122 of the Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale of Florence (= F), dated 1408. The essay is divided into three parts: the first reviews the particularly rich and multifaceted Latin and vernacular manuscript tradition of the Liber; the second deals with the translation transmitted by F, wich is almost complete and quite faithful to the Latin original, comparing it to the other Italian vernacular translations; the third proposes a codicological and paleographic description of F.

Between 1466 and 1467 about twenty men and women from Poli (in Lazio) and Maiolati (Marche) were tried with the accusation of adhering to the heresy of the fraticelli. The examination repeatedly insisted on the barilotto (keg) accusation: more or less prompdy confirmed by the accused -who were subject to torture - it regarded the incestuous orgies, the ritual infanticides and the acts of cannibalism in which the heretics would have indulged in their nocturnal meetings. From the accusations against the early Christians, medieval heretical groups and the Jews, the elements of this hostile stereotype had a long tradition, in which gender discrimination (the sexual unruliness typical of witches) met with class discrimination, since the barilotto was also a typical element of satire against peasants. After having recalled the accusation's genealogy, the essay aims to interpret its strategical reasons. These connect to the theological and ecclesiologica! evolution of fifteenth-century papacy, which was by then disinterested towards compromise with the ideals or evangelical poverty, and, after the end of the Schism, less and less willing to tolerate whatever could jeopardize its hierarchical structure. The article examines the stereotype's effectiveness, which was due to the wide reach of the pastoral activity of the minoritic Observance, that aimed at discrediting the fraticelli, whose ideals of Christian perfection were in competition with it. The article also analyses the literary fortune of this stereotype, from the historiographical and polemical literature of the Reformation and Counterreformation up to Bayle's Dictionnaire.

The article provides a study and critical edition of a short latin dialogue on the question of the poverty of Christ and the Apostles. The text, so far unknown, is transmitted by the commentary on the Old Testament written around 1450 by the Sienese magister Pietro de’ Rossi. Even if it has a dialogical structure, in which both Michael of Cesena and a spokesperson of John XXII present their thesis, the work is clearly favorable to the Pope. The article argues that the text, dating back to about 1340-1350, offers an unusual perspective on the controversy, providing new insights on this stage of the debate. In particular, the dialogue takes advantage of arguments used, contested and sharpened for years during the discussion, and presents several references to the dissident friars living in the Eremo delle Carceri (near Assisi) or in Corsica, and to Ubertino da Casale’s opinion on the apostolic poverty controversy.

After a brief overview of the author (whose odd piety was consider­ ed suspicious by ecclesiastical authorities in the early sixteenth century) the introduction offers some basic historical and philological data on these texts, all published here for the first time, and it underlines as well how Biondo’s Franciscan eschatology and mysticism sometimes render the poems’ meaning rather difficult to grasp.

Negli studi sui rapporti tra umanesimo e minoritismo il topos della renovatio è stato indubbiamente uno degli aspetti più battuti, a partire dalle celebri opere di Henry Thode e Konrad Burdach. Dopo una breve riflessione sulla storiografia – che pare giunta da tempo a un punto morto – si tenterà di porre diversamente e sviluppare in una direzione precisa (in rapporto alla circolazione del Liber chronicarum di Angelo Clareno in ambienti umanistici) non la tesi, bensì il punto di partenza dell'indagine di Burdach: l'idea, cioè, di possibili nessi tra renovatio mistico-religiosa tardo medievale (della tradizione francescana spirituale) e renovatio umanistica. L'ideale della "vita solitaria" conta al contrario su una storiografia più recente e più vivace, e rivolta non soltanto alla storia minoritica. Gli studi di Cécile Caby hanno infatti mostrato come alcuni caratteri comuni (tra cui la circolazione di celebri opere di Petrarca e il richiamo a una tradizione patristica scoperta o riscoperta attraverso una lettura condotta con criteri umanistici) permettano di comparare l'evoluzione dell'ideale della solitudo tra cenacoli di umanisti e circoli religiosi riformatori. Ci si soffermerà quindi sul caso francescano, considerando rapidamente l'evoluzione dell'ideale eremitico dell'Osservanza ai tempi di Bernardino da Siena. La terza questione che si intende affrontare, quella della povertà, dopo un pionieristico (e problematico) saggio di Hans Baron, non ha ricevuto l'attenzione e la discussione che meritava. Si affronterà quindi il problema da una prospettiva precisa, quella dell'umanesimo curiale, nel contesto del dibattito sulla povertà che si svolse negli anni '60 del Quattrocento, sotto il pontificato di Paolo II (1464-1471). Un dibattito con implicazioni politiche ed ecclesiologiche rilevanti, tali da oltrepassare l'occasione specifica, ossia gli ultimi episodi della repressione della tradizione dissidente dei fraticelli.

Among Paolo Giustiniani's papers there is a dossier which contains some annotations against contemporary "false prophets". The draft of a letter addressed to three Florentine ladies, Gabriele Biondo's followers, are the subject of this study, that aims to show the various outcomes of the religious tensions that led both Giustiniani and Biondo to choose a secluded life on the Tuscan Appennine. While the hermit was committed in an extended reform of the entire Christianity, Biondo was the spiritual guide of a group focused on an interior and hidden religion, waiting for the final renovatio. Along with women's participation, the occult character of such a devotion brought Giustiniani to identify it as a particularly dangerous heresy.

The first chronicles on the diffusion of the "French disease" in Italy date back to the summer of 1495. As it was interpreted as a divine punishment and a new and incurable illness, the disease was promptly associated to the one that had affected Job. The essay focuses on the analysis of two poems (cantari) in ottava rima: The Historia di sancto Iob propheta of Giuliano Dati, and a briefer remake, the anonymous Prego devotissimo. The two pamphlets were diffused at a low cost and it's probable that they were publicly read in squares. In respect with the Bible, they supply a very simplified version, where the steady patience of the protagonist in suffering and tribulations is enhanced on the only basis of its prose frame context (instead, the lively poetic dialogue with his friends is almost completely wiped out). To Saint Job, to whom people appeal so that he could intercede to God in favour of the sinners and persuade them to imitate him, was, therefore, dedicated a cult promoted by confraternities entitled to him. These confraternities founded hospitals for 'the Incurables', specifically for French disease-affected patients dedicated in some cases to the same Job, patron of the franciosati. In addition, a series of literary and iconographic documents (fifteen for central-northern Italy) witness the devotion.

Si è cominciato a studiare la filosofia italiana della seconda metà del XX secolo da nuovi punti di vista, emancipandosi dalle ricostruzioni dei protagonisti nelle quali vibrava, comprensibilmente, una forte nota di carattere autobiografico. Questo lavoro – che ha già dato notevoli risultati, dissolvendo miti storiografici assai resistenti – è stato reso possibile, oltre che dall’accrescersi della distanza storica, dalla possibilità di disporre di nuovi documenti, sia pubblici che privati. Fra questi ultimi spiccano i carteggi che permettono in molti casi di vedere cosa si agitava dietro le quinte delle discussioni e dei rapporti pubblici, consentendo di individuare la genesi complessa, talvolta tormentata, di lavori che oggi ci appaiono nella veste di classici, quasi estranei al tempo in cui nacquero e in cui vollero invece collocarsi anche come momenti di una battaglia filosofica e culturale, di cui oggi si sono perse le tracce. Il carteggio tra Eugenio Garin e Ugo Spirito è, in questo senso, uno strumento prezioso e indispensabile per la capacità che ha di gettare luce su una lunga, intensa stagione della cultura filosofica italiana attraverso le lettere di due dei suoi principali protagonisti.

In un celebre passo dei Discorsi (i 11), Machiavelli pone in rilievo il paradossale contrasto tra la cultura ed esperienza dei Fiorentini e la fiducia da loro mostrata nella virtú profetica di Savonarola. L’articolo intende analizzare i termini con cui l’autore si esprime su tale tematica, anche attraverso il riscontro con analoghi giudi­ zi dei contemporanei e, in particolare, in riferimento all’ipotesi di una valenza iro­nica, e forse intenzionalmente contradditoria, di detta riflessione. In a famous passage of his Discorsi (i 11) Machiavelli emphasizes the paradoxical contrast between the Florentines’ culture and experience on the one hand and their trust in Savonarola’s prohetic powers on the other hand. The article aims to analyse how the author views this issue, also by evaluating his contemporaries’ opinions and, above all, by assessing the possibility of an ironic twist (if not an intentional contradiction) behind his thought.

Michele Lodone, Translation, censorship, rewriting: on the fortune of P. Vergil’s De rerum inventoribus Polydore Vergil’s De rerum inventoribus was an exstraordinary succesful work. Books 4 to 8 – de inventoribus rei christianae – attracted the attention both from the Catholic side and the Reformation one. After reviewing the mixed editorial fortune of the treatise, the article will focus on four specific topics (the origin of clerical celibacy, the problem of the dishonest collection of alms by the mendicant orders, the mass liturgy, the act of kissing Roman pope’s feet), read and rewritten through different perspectives: the Catholic censors’ one, the anglican translator, i.e. T. Langley’s one, and the one of a lutheran polemist (M. Flacius Illyricus).
