Insegnamento: Laboratory of Condensed Matter Physics

Physics - Fisica (Offerta formativa 2021)

Obiettivi formativi

This laboratory course prepares students for experimental research in modern condensed matter and material science. Teaching aims of the course are:
Knowledge of the basic working principle of a selected experimental techniques in condensed matter state-of –the-art research.

Ability to search for the relevant literature and exploit it to design the experimental investigation.
Ability to design, set up and perform research-level experimental investigations, aiming at the characterization of a device/material at the micro and nanoscale.

Ability to present and discuss, both in written and oral form, the results of an experimental research.

Prerequisiti

None required. A good knowledge of structure of matter and condensed matter physics is strongly advised.

Programma del corso

Basic principles and of selected experimental techniques in condensed matter physics:
Scanning Electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Refectivity and trasmissivity of thin films.
Moreover, students will set-up from scratch and
perform an experiment on frustrated internal reflection.

Experimental activity in research labs, exploiting a selection of the studied techniques, to investigate the properties of condensed matter at the micro and nanoscale.

Metodi didattici

-Lectures presenting the basic principles of a few selected state-of-the-art experimental techniques in condensed matter physics and materials science
-Under supervision, the students will perform three experiments exploiting the presented techinques to investigate the structural, electronic or vibrational properties of selected materials/samples. The experiment wil be carried out in the Department research laboratories and/or at “Centro Interdipartimentale Grandi Strumenti” of the University.
Working student should perform a minimum number of lab classes, to be defined with the teacher
office hours (by e-mail appointment) Monday, 15-17 - Please, send an e-mail to check availability

Verifica dell'apprendimento

For each experiment the student should produce a written report, which will be also discussed in an oral presentation. The knowledge of the topics covered by lectures will be also subject to oral examination.

Risultati attesi

Knowledge and understanding
At the end of the course the student would know the basic working principle of selected experimental techniques in condensed matter reasearch (electron microscopies, X-ray diffraction, soft litography, X-ray photoemission and energy loss spectroscopies).

Applying knowledge and understanding:

At the end of the course the student would be able to set up and perform experiments, exploiting the above mentioned techniques to investigate the properties of devices and materials at the micro- and nanoscale.

Making judgements:

At the end of the course the student should be able to critically analise the results of their investigation and, in case, devise further experiments.

Communicating skills:

At the end of the course students would be able to write clear, rigorous and concise experimental paper. Moreover, they would be able to present and discuss orally the results of their investigations in the style of contributed conference talks.

Learning skills:

At the end of the course students would be able to start from research literature to devise their own (at least partially original) experimental investigation.
