2022 - Shifting Missions: Languages, Texts, and Experiences between Jews and Roman Catholics in Israel (1940s–1970s) [Capitolo/Saggio]
Rioli, Maria Chiara
abstract

The discussion over the meaning of the concept of “mission” has marked historical relations between Christians and Jews in Palestine since the nineteenth century. The interpretation of the “mission of the Church to the Jews” and the “mission of the Jews within the Church” dominated the theological and pastoral reflections of the Catholic Church in late Ottoman and then Mandate Palestine, and, after 1948, in the State of Israel. At the same time, in the traumatic wake of the Holocaust, Jewish Israeli public opinion elaborated a vision of the Christian churches in Israel as essentially missionary enterprises devoted to conversionist attempts toward the Jews, so that in the press and in political debates the word “Churches” was often replaced with the term “the Mission” (ha-Misyon).

2021 - L’archivio Mediterraneo. Documentare le migrazioni contemporanee [Monografia/Trattato scientifico]
Rioli, MARIA CHIARA
abstract

Ruozzi, Federico; Rioli, MARIA CHIARA; MARIA CHIARA, Rioli
abstract

The close relationship between Giorgio La Pira and Lorenzo Milani as well as their mutual influences have been frequently mentioned by histo- riography, but not adequately explored. This study of their unpublished correspondence sheds light on their respective biographies and provides an in-depth analysis of some relevant moments of their religious and political actions. These new letters, combined with previous archival documents, al- low to reconstruct some instances of the Florentine and Italian Catholicism. The historicization of these two figures enables the study to investigate be- yond the hagiographies and condemnations that still strongly characterize the public debate on both La Pira and Milani.

2020 - The Association of Saint James: a Hebrew-Christian Church in Israel [Capitolo/Saggio]
Rioli, Maria Chiara
abstract

The history of the Palestine War does not only concern military history. It also involves social, humanitarian and religious history, as in the case of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Jerusalem. A Liminal Church offers a complex narrative of the Latin patriarchal diocese, commonly portrayed as monolithically aligned with anti-Zionist and anti-Muslim positions during the “long” year of 1948. Making use of largely unpublished archives in the Middle East, Europe and the United States, including the recently released Pius XII papers, Maria Chiara Rioli depicts a church engaged in multiple and sometimes contradictory pastoral initiatives, amid harsh battles, relief missions for Palestinian refugees, theological reflections on Jewish converts to Catholicism, political relations with the Israeli and Jordanian authorities, and liturgical responses to a fluid and uncertain scenario. The pieces of this history include the Jerusalem grand mufti’s appeal to Pius XII to support the Arab cause, the Catholic liturgies for peace and international mobilization during the Palestine War and Suez crisis, refugees petitioning the patriarch for aid, and Jewish converts establishing Christian kibbutzim. New archival collections and records reveal hidden aspects of the lives of women, children and other silenced actors, faith communities and religious institutions during and after 1948, connecting narratives that have been marginalized by a dominant historiography more focused on military campaigns or confessional conflicts. A Liminal Church weaves diocesan history with global history. In the momentous decade from 1946 to 1956, the study of the transnational Jerusalem Latin diocese, as split between Israel, Jordan, Egypt and Cyprus, with ties to diaspora and religious international networks and comprising clergy from all over the world, attests to the possibilities of contrapuntal narratives, reintroducing complexity to a deeply and painfully polarized debate, exposing false assumptions and situating changes and ruptures in a long-term perspective.

2017 - The ‘New Nazis’ or the ‘People of our God’? Jews and Zionism in the Latin Church of Jerusalem, 1948–1962 [Articolo su rivista]
Rioli, Maria Chiara
abstract

In the aftermath of the Holocaust the elaboration of Catholic perceptions of the Jewish people has been particularly problematic. The weight of a long tradition of Christian antisemitism and its influence on the Nazi extermination programme, as well as the revision of this attitude before and after the Shoah in various Catholic circles as a means of promoting a rapprochement, made it difficult to redefine the image of Jewish people in the Catholic imagination, and gave rise to different and conflicting interpretations. Some members of the Latin Catholic Church of Jerusalem began to argue for an analogy between Nazism and Zionism. This assertion took different forms as the political situation in Palestine evolved and in response to changing attitudes within the Church towards the Jews. This paper will reconstruct the 'new Nazis' paradigm in the Jerusalem Church, analysing three key periods: the 1947-9 Arab-Israeli war; the consolidation of the State of Israel in the 1950s; and the Eichmann trial of 1961-2.
