The aim of this paper is to analyse hate speech in 19th century Germany from a linguistic perspective. The paper thus examines the works of three German authors who are regarded as exemplary for the emergence and further development of German-language hate speech: 1) Ernst Moritz Arndt, Über den Volkshaß und über den Gebrauch einer fremden Sprache (1813); 2) Wilhelm Marr (1819–1904), Der Sieg des Judenthums über das Germanenthum (1879), and 3) Otto Böckel (1859–1923), Die Juden – Die Könige unserer Zeit (1887). The analysis shows that the hate language had been particularly present in journalism and literature since the end of the 18th century, affecting diverse aspects of social life and becoming part of the political debate, especially during the emergence of the German nation after the Napoleonic wars.

Il discorso politico nelle sue varie forme ed espressioni è caratterizzato dall’uso di espressioni idiomatiche la cui funzione principale sembra essere quella di concentrare l’attenzione sugli aspetti emozionali del discorso. Nel linguaggio dei partiti populisti, sia di destra che di sinistra, i fraseologismi vengono frequentemente usati per presentare e supportare idee e programmi nel tentativo di attirare votanti e mantenere viva la loro attenzione su alcune tematiche (si pensi ad esempio alla crisi migratoria, alla pandemia di COVID-19). All’interno di questo contesto, il presente contributo si prefigge lo scopo di analizzare l’uso e la funzione dei fraseologismi di diversa tipologia nei programmi e nei comizi elettorali dei partiti populisti di destra, l’Alternative für Deutschland, e di sinistra, DIE LINKE, durante il periodo della campagna elettorale per le elezioni fede- rali tedesche del 2021. Dall’analisi emerge che l’immediatezza e l’intelligibilità delle espressioni idiomatiche conferiscono enfasi al testo e contribuiscono alla comprensione di un determinato messaggio astratto, oltre che a connotare negativamente l’avversario.

The identity issue is approached in this essay within the framework of political language studies and concentrates on the analysis of the party program of the German leftwing party DIE LINKE or Linkspartei. This relatively new party was founded in 2007 from the fusion of various German left-wing parties, and presents itself as a feasible alternative to the growing populism and as the only one that can solve the problems afflicting the German society and – more generally – the Western world. The linguistic and textual analysis of the party program shows how and through which linguistic strategies the party forges its own identity, which must be approved both internally by its members and externally by possible electors.

Ageing and the linguistic expression of emotions are two concepts that have been studied from numerous points of view. This paper’s focus is a lexical and prosodic analysis of a corpus consisting of audio files taken from different sources (ZDF Mediathek, YouTube), whose protagonists are old people, native speakers of German. The aim is to investigate the way in which older German speakers express emotions, both from an acoustic-prosodic and lexical-semantic point of view. The results of the present analysis point out that, despite established works in the field regard ageing as a mainly negative concept – linked with images of deterioration, weakness and loss (cf. Butler 1969 and the concept of ageism) – positive emotions cannot be put aside when analyzing the emotional production of the elderly, both on the lexical and on the prosodic level. Thus, we suggest that ageing should not be studied from an ageism-perspective, but that it should be mainly regarded as a variable on the diastratic variation axis.

Nella modernità le lingue si perdono, si mescolano, raccontano il mondo con tinte diverse. Ed è in questi spazi reali e/ o simbolici che avvengono amalgame letterarie e concettuali ricche di significato: tra il simile e il diverso, ciò che è morto e ciò che è vivo, ciò che ti appartiene e ciò che invece si affaccia inatteso alla tua coscienza. Gli scrittori migranti si proiettano verso lo sconfinamento portando con sé radici e geografie: le vicende narrate non si abbarbicano più ad un contesto, ma vanno ricostruite passando per un numero ampio di frammenti: attraverso codici spaziali, mnemonici, simbolici e immaginari, che non è facile ma appassionante ricostruire.

This article undertakes a linguistic analysis of the novel Palast der Miserablen (2020), written by the German-Iraqi author Abbas Khider (1973). The study focuses on the verbalization of the emotion of fear, which, although it is not the main theme of the novel, pervades the entire narrative, and affects its expressivity. The analysis is based on the assumption that the impact potential of a literary text depends to a considerable extent on its emotion power. Linguistic analysis can identify structures at various levels of a text, through which these emotions are encoded and expressed. Following the thoughts of Schwarz-Friesel in Sprache und Emotion (2013), those elements are identified on the lexical level of the novel, and they contribute to the verbalisation of the emotion of fear. The analysis is centred on three sets of questions: 1. the influence of emotions on language processing, 2. the conceptualisation of emotions in linguistic expressions, and 3. the reciprocal relationship between certain emotions and their linguistic designations in individual text types or texts.

The present paper aims to investigate the role that the preface as peritext plays in 18th-century German-language travel writings through the analysis of Georg Forster’s preface to his Reise um die Welt (1777, English Transl: Voyage Around the World). Georg Forster and his father took part in James Cook’s second voyage around the world (1772-1775) with the task of describing the journey. When they returned to England, Foster’s father was prohibited from writing this narrative, so the young Georg decided to describe the journey in his place and published it six weeks before Cook’s official report. A year later he translated his work into German. The preface of the German edition is interesting in many ways: Forster wrote it following the fashion of the time, when the preface was a binding part of the work. In this preface, he explains his ideas and how the work was conceived, while putting himself and his work on the scientific map of his time.

Karl Wolfskehl (1869-1948) ist oft nur als Dichter des George-Kreises bekannt, jedoch beschäftigte er sich auch mit dem Übersetzen. Seine übersetzerische Tätigkeit ist aber in Vergessenheit geraten und vor allem ist sein literarisches Schaffen nach 1933, also nach seinem Exil in Neuseeland, bekannt. Sein Interesse für die Literatur, die Sprache und die Geschichte spiegelt sich in seinem Werk und in seinen Übersetzungen, die er als Bestandteile seines Werkes betrachtete. Er übersetzte von antiken und modernen Sprachen (sehr gute Sprachkenntnisse hatte er in italienischer, französischer und holländischer Sprache) und versuchte, die Ausgangstexte in eine Zielsprache zu übertragen, die das ideale geschichtliche Milieu des Originals wieder geben könnte, so wäre auch der kulturelle und soziale Kontext reproduziert, in dem das Werk entstand. Im Aufsatz Von Sinn und Rang des Übersetzens (1926, GW II: 414-19) erklärt er seine Idee von Übersetzung, die auf die höchste Bewahrung sowohl des Inhaltes wie auch der Form vom Ausgangstext zielt. Diese Bewahrung ist eine poetische und bewusste Verpflichtung, insbesondere wenn es sich um Texte in antiken Sprachen geht, wie seine Übersetzungen aus dem mittelalterlichen Latein in den 20er Jahren beweisen. Darauf aufmerksam setzte sich der Beitrag zum Ziel, solche Aspekte von Wolfskehl’schem Werk zu analysieren und zu zeigen, wie die zwei Naturen eines Autors, der sowohl als Schriftsteller wie auch als Übersetzer tätig war, sich ergänzen und einander beeinflussen.

The essay aims to explore the thought and work of Wilhelm von Humboldt (1767-1835) referring to the concept of utopia. Humboldt is known for his studies on Language, Philosophy, Aesthetics and Political Philosophy, but he is not considered a utopian thinker. Through the analysis of his mains works and his main ideas (language as organism, unity and diversity etc.) the essay tries to demonstrate that his work can be read as utopian. In his work utopia is not be considered as the project of a future better world, but as paradigm of knowledge (Denkform), intentional concept that pushes the man to educate himself and to work on the present.

Il volume costituisce un tentativo di analisi dell'immenso carteggio che Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) tenne nel corso della sua lunga vita con le più disparate personalità: Goethe, Schiller, Lichtenberg, Thomas Jefferson ecc. La scrittura epistolare fu per Humboldt un colloquio a distanza, un luogo dove affermare la propria persona come scrittore e come scienziato e dove imporre il proprio lavoro sia sul piano scientifico che su quello artistico e sociale. il suo carteggio non solo accompagna e testimonia le varie fasi evolutive delle sue opere, la più famosa delle quali è Kosmos - Entwurf einer physischen Weltbeschreibung (1845-1862), ma porta anche alla luce la sua aspirazione letteraria.

Cet essai examine le rapport d'Alexander von Humboldt avec la France par l'analyse des lettres qu'il écrivit aux intellectueles français. Tout d'abord, la lettre est un lieu d'affirmation d'individualité, lieu d'écriture où se manifestent l'émotion et l'affect, par le moyen d'une écriture mimant parfois l'oralité. L'écritetur épistolaire possède une puissance stylistique qui lui est propre et dont le but est de transmettre au destinataire une information, tout simplement, de rester en contact avec lui. Par les lettres de Humboldt on peut avoir une image plus compléte de sa vie dans la capitale française. Il s'agit de lettres que HUmboldt a écrites pendant son séjour parisien et plus tard à Berlin. Humboldt écrit à des hommes et femmes des lettres qui aujourd'hio sont oublié, mais qui sont très important pour comprendere quelque élements de sa pensée: dansces lettres, Humbolt paròe de ses intérêts et des idées scientifiques entre autres. Ses lettres conservent l'élément narratif du récit tout en mettant l'accent sur la subjectivité. Il y a un rapport réciproque entre le rédacteur des lettres et le destinataire spécifique. les lettres exigent aussi le rôle actif du destinataire, car le message dépend de la personnalité de celui-ci du degré d'intimité entre les deux personnens en contact. Humboldt come auteur des lettres essaie d'établir une proximité temporelle des évènements ou aciotns vécus à travers le langage. Parmi le lettres considérés ici se trouvent celles destinées à Léonie-d'Aunet-BIard, la maîtresse de Victor Hugo, à Louis-Aimé Martin, Antoine Jullien ou encore Auguste de Staël, témoignages non seulement de la variété de ses intérts, mais sourtout de sa vie à Paris.FRANCESE
